Kyle Lowry to sign a one-day contract to retire with the Raptors

Kyle Lowry’s Retirement Plans

Kyle Lowry is reportedly set to announce his retirement at a special event in Toronto next week—this city has been central to his two-decade NBA journey.

However, it seems he wasn’t very pleased that news of his retirement got out early.

According to reports from Michael Grange, Lowry intends to sign a one-day contract with the Raptors to officially retire during a press conference scheduled for July 7.

The Raptors have described the event as a “monumental moment” for the team.

Interestingly, Lowry expressed his dissatisfaction on social media, kind of calling out Sportsnet for covering his announcement prematurely. “Wait to hear from me, not someone else!!! Hmm,” he posted in an Instagram Story.

He didn’t provide any further comments, but he didn’t deny the retirement either; his social media activity seemed to hint at this reaction to the report.

Additionally, it’s suggested that he will receive further accolades during the 2026-27 season, including the permanent retirement of his No. 7 jersey at Scotiabank Arena.

This would put Lowry in a select group, joining Vince Carter as the only Raptors player to achieve jersey retirement.

Reflecting on his time with the Raptors, Lowry played with them from 2012-13 to 2020-21, averaging 17.5 points per game while shooting 42.5 percent from the field.

He played a crucial role in the franchise winning its first NBA Championship in 2019 and was also a member of the USA team that clinched gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

As he steps away from the game, Lowry will leave as the franchise’s all-time leader in assists, steals, three-pointers made, and playoff victories.

Beyond his time in Toronto, Lowry has also played for the Rockets, Grizzlies, Heat, and 76ers.
