New generic abortion pill approved, triggering backlash from conservatives

This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new formulation of the abortion pill mifepristone, which has sparked backlash from conservative groups.

On Tuesday, the FDA communicated with Evita Solutions, indicating that their application for the new drug had met necessary criteria for approval.

“We have determined that your Mifepristone tablets, 200 mg, are comparable to Reference List Drugs (RLD), Mifeprex (Mifepristone) tablets, 200 mg, and Danco Laboratories,” the FDA’s letter noted.

The FDA originally approved Mifepristone back in 2000. This medication, used alongside misoprostol, accounts for roughly two-thirds of abortions in the country.

Recently, Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty McCurry hinted at possible changes regarding risk assessment and mitigation strategies, referencing “recent studies that raise concerns about the current management of mifepristone safety.”

This decision has drawn protests from anti-abortion advocates.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, head of the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Prolife America, has labeled the approval “merciless.”

“These dangerous drugs will take the lives of your unborn baby, put women and minor girls at serious risk, strengthen abusers, and trample on life support laws enacted by states around the country,” Dannenfelser stated, emphasizing her call for the Trump administration to reverse Biden-era changes.

Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) echoed these sentiments, commenting on social media, “This is shocking. The FDA has approved another chemical abortion drug despite evidence suggesting that these drugs can be dangerous to mothers. Of course, they are 100% deadly to children.”

Inquiries were made to Evita Solutions for feedback. Their website notes that the FDA-approved product “will be here soon.”

“There are medically unnecessary limitations and social stigmas in the United States, leading many who choose to end their pregnancy to face difficulties obtaining the care they need,” the site reads.
