Florida Tourism Chief Declines Invitation to World Economic Forum Summit
Brian Griffin, the president and CEO of the Sunshine Tourism Office in Florida, has turned down an invitation to the upcoming Urban Transport Summit hosted by the World Economic Forum. He stated, “Florida rejects the World Economic Forum agenda,” in a post where he explained his decision and mentioned he received emails about the event.
The summit is set to occur in San Francisco later this month and aims to gather decision-makers to discuss how urban areas can adapt to various rapid changes, including demographic, technological, and environmental shifts.
Griffin, who has a background as a communications director for the governor’s office, expressed his refusal to attend, citing a mismatch between Florida’s values and those of the World Economic Forum. He described WEF’s initiatives, including top-down government regulations, digital IDs, and centralized digital currencies, as contradictory to what’s best for Florida.
“We choose Destin and Dunedin’s values over Davos,” he added, emphasizing the importance of individual liberty and national sovereignty. The World Economic Forum, often labeled controversial, brings together influential political and business leaders globally.
According to the WEF’s own description, it seeks to foster global cooperation and trust through a platform for public-private partnerships aimed at progress. Griffin’s stance reflects a growing sentiment among some officials regarding participation in such global discussions.
