Portland Police Will Not Support ICE, Yet Arrested a Conservative Journalist

Reporter Arrested Amid Portland Protests

Nick Salter, a conservative journalist, faced arrest from Portland police on Thursday night, despite local authorities having previously avoided detaining those involved in anti-ICE protests at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the city.

In recent months, facilities in Dallas and Chicago were subjected to similar unrest, which appears part of a growing violent response against efforts to detain undocumented immigrants. Salter was arrested, reportedly under allegations related to disorderly conduct. Bill Melugin, a reporter, shared details about the situation on social media.

According to Melugin, “I saw an anti-ICE protester burning an American flag last night in Portland. I took the flag from them, doused the flames, and got rid of the remnants,” showcasing a moment that adds to the ongoing tension. It’s unclear what prompted Salter’s arrest, but there are plans to connect with him upon his release.

Melugin noted that Salter felt threatened by protestors and expressed concern that the police might target him instead of protecting his safety. After Salter’s arrest, reports indicated that he was later released.

In a post made early Thursday, Salter referred to Portland as “the hell of the Third World,” asserting that Antifa had taken control of the area. He expressed frustration over the situation, suggesting that if he were to defend himself, he would be the one facing consequences.

This incident follows an attack on another journalist, Katie Davistour, just days earlier, where she endured harassment from protestors while trying to seek police assistance.

Officials at ICE in Portland have expressed concern over the lack of support from local law enforcement. They described a situation where the police appear unwilling to engage due to the political climate around these protests, leading to feelings of vulnerability for those involved.

One official commented on the disconnect between the community and law enforcement, noting that it often takes time for police to respond to incidents even occurring right outside the ICE facility.

Melugin reported witnessing an altercation nearby, where a pro-ICE supporter and an anti-ICE protester clashed. This encounter escalated, resulting in injuries that prompted intervention from federal authorities.

The protests and violence surrounding immigration enforcement have drawn national attention, with former President Trump labeling Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization last September.

These events highlight the ongoing tensions in Portland surrounding immigration policy, local governance, and public safety, raising questions about how best to address these complex issues.
