Jeffries: Trump is not taking the shutdown seriously

On Friday morning, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) expressed concerns about the implications of a potential federal government shutdown, claiming it could be “unsafe.” This remark came as political tensions continued to escalate, particularly as President Trump worked to secure government funding.

Jeffries stated, “It’s becoming increasingly clear that Republicans are intent on shutting down the government.” During his appearance on MSNBC, he added, “Everything President Trump did on Monday seems unhinged and unsafe.”

He further remarked that Trump was metaphorically in a “President’s Witness Protection Program,” suggesting that Trump is avoiding responsibility. “No one can find him because he knows he’s the one who caused this situation,” Jeffries told “Morning Joe” host Jonathan Remair. He stressed that Trump’s recent actions were further proof of the troubling reality.

In response to inquiries, Oka reached out to the White House for comment.

This criticism follows a recent incident where Trump shared an AI-generated video that mocked Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), suggesting they were to blame for funding issues. The video featured Jeffries in a sombrero with a handlebar mustache, prompting New York Democrats to label it as “racist.” Meanwhile, Vice President Vance labeled the clip “funny,” implying that it was all in jest.

On Friday, Democratic leaders in the House indicated a willingness to negotiate honestly with Republicans but emphasized that any spending bill must address the needs of Americans, especially in healthcare and the economy. Jeffries stated, “As Democrats, both Schumer and I, along with others, have made our stance clear.”

He underscored the importance of ensuring that any funding plan considers the rising costs of living and the healthcare crisis, noting that many Americans face medical bankruptcy. Thus, he insisted that any spending proposal must genuinely reflect the necessities of the American populace.
