Report: Suspect in Synagogue Terror Attack Was Out on Bail Following Alleged Rape

Manchester Synagogue Attack Suspect Released on Bail

Jihad al-Shamy, a suspected assailant in the recent Manchester Synagogue attack, was reportedly on bail for rape charges at the time of the incident, which took place during Yom Kippur.

The alleged rape occurred in early 2025, and Greater Manchester police are currently investigating al-Shamy, according to various sources.

It has been reported that al-Shamy had other criminal convictions not related to terrorism. One source mentioned, “He wasn’t known for terrorism, but he definitely had a criminal past. Still, there wasn’t anything that indicated he was capable of this.”

Meanwhile, police are looking into a previous death threat made against former Conservative MP John Howell in 2012.

On October 2, 2025, police engaged with members of the community near the Heaton Park Hebrew Congress synagogue after a violent attack occurred. Law enforcement confirmed that two individuals were killed and three others injured as a car crashed into the area, with stabbings reported outside the synagogue. The alleged attacker was shot by police and later died, though details surrounding his death are still being confirmed.

In an email reportedly sent by al-Shamy, he stated, “It’s people like you who deserve to die.” Howell expressed uncertainties about whether this was the same individual, while police acknowledged that they may not have taken appropriate precautions regarding the earlier threat.

During the attack, al-Shamy is said to have driven his vehicle into the synagogue and subsequently attacked a resident with a knife, resulting in two fatalities before he was fatally wounded by police.

According to reports, armed officers may have unintentionally shot one of the victims during the chaos. Interior Secretary Shabana Mahmood noted that the counter-terrorism unit was not aware of al-Shamy prior to the incident. Greater Manchester Police did not respond promptly to requests for comment.
