Police Arrest Three Suspects After Armored Vehicle Robbery
Police apprehended three individuals following a robbery of an armored vehicle that sparked a chase through Philadelphia and Montgomery counties, leading to lockdowns at several schools.
According to reports, officers were taking a break near City Avenue when they noticed at least three men attempting to breach the armored vehicle. After police and FBI agents arrived in search of suspects linked to a prior incident, the men fled, armed, which prompted a pursuit.
The chase involved Philadelphia police as well as forces from Lower Merion, and additional officers searched for the suspects on foot in Lower Merion.
In a tweet, NBC 10 confirmed that three suspects were in custody, but authorities were still searching for a fourth individual along City Avenue. The ongoing situation had led to shelter-in-place orders at schools including Lower Merion School, Bala Cynwyd, and the Hawk Hill campus at St. Joseph’s University.
According to reports, two of the suspects were arrested near 52nd and Parrish Streets in West Philadelphia, while the third was found near Conshohocken State Highway in Lower Merion Township. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the pursuit.
Lower Merion Police Principal Andy Brock shared that his department was called to assist when the suspects fled into their area. “These individuals fled from the police in the city and notified us for help,” Brock explained.
By around 12:45 PM, Brock confirmed that all three suspects had been captured. The lockdown was eventually lifted at schools including Merion School and St. Joseph’s University. Police also planned to enhance security at nearby schools as a precaution, and the shelter orders were rescinded afterward.
A spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department directed inquiries to the FBI, which confirmed the arrests via email. “Today, the FBI responded to an attempted robbery of an armored vehicle. The suspects are in custody. We appreciate the quick and coordinated efforts of our law enforcement partners,” the spokesperson stated.
