Former Principal Ian Roberts Faces Deportation Amid Controversy
Ian Roberts, once a celebrated figure in Des Moines and seen as a champion of immigrant rights, is now under scrutiny. Students gathered at the Capitol recently, expressing their support for Roberts by rallying around his slogan, “Radical Empathy,” while calling for his release from prison.
Supporters even showcased banners reading “Free Dr. Roberts” from a bridge above the highway, drawing attention to his situation. Roberts, originally from Guyana, has been involved in legal battles since 2020 and is currently facing possible deportation from the United States, with the Department of Homeland Security overseeing his case.
“An innocent man, he’s not done anything wrong,” declared a host, ironically critiquing the narrative surrounding Roberts. The host emphasized the larger political implications, suggesting, “If his story unravels, the entire immigration case could be in jeopardy.”
Insights into Roberts’ background are revealing, with immigration authorities alleging he has been residing and working illegally in the U.S. Claims suggesting he earned a doctorate in Urban Education Leadership from Morgan State University in 2007 have been challenged. The university has confirmed that he did not complete the degree despite being enrolled from 2002 to 2007.
Additionally, while Roberts lists the MIT Sloan School of Management among his credentials, there appears to be no record of his attendance, according to a university spokesperson.
Locally, Melody Ellington, who served as the Human Resources Director for the Millcreek Township School District, claims she faced illegal treatment while working with Roberts until 2021. She alleges that her exit was unfair and hinted at legal actions, though district leaders denied any wrongdoing. Eventually, the district agreed to a settlement of $250,000 with her.
In a surprising turn of events, Roberts found himself in trouble with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in late September when he reportedly fled from his vehicle. Observers noted that such behavior was unusual for someone in a significant educational role.
While the situation unfolds, the implications of Roberts’ case—both personally and politically—remain complex and mired in ambiguity.
