Tragic Murder Case of Arizona Girl
The death of a 13-year-old girl, who had epilepsy, has been ruled a murder after authorities discovered she was confined in what has been described as a “make-up cage” at her grandmother’s home in Arizona.
Melony Granados suffered from a rare type of epilepsy and cognitive impairment. Despite her challenges, she had the ability to care for her grandmother, Virginia Lujan. Lujan, 55, was charged in February with child abuse and related offenses linked to the girl’s death, according to prosecutors.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office recently confirmed that Granados’ death was a homicide. More details can be found in earlier reports.
Abandoned Baby Mystery Solved
In other news, an investigation uncovered the circumstances surrounding a mystery of an abandoned baby from 1989, which was recently resolved. It emerged that the baby’s mother had been murdered in the desert.
On January 20, Lujan dialed 911, claiming her granddaughter was unresponsive inside their Tempe home. Upon arrival, officers found Granados on the living room floor with a significant bruise. Lujan explained that the girl had fallen down the stairs.
Tragically, Granados died the following day in the hospital.
Investigators described the living conditions in the home as “filthy,” filled with trash and insects. They reported finding bunk beds that had been modified into makeshift cages surrounded by baby gates, alongside a significant amount of human waste.
Granados, who had severe cognitive impairment, was one of five children belonging to Lujan’s daughter, Jami Hodges. Surprising as it may seem, Hodges had previously entrusted custody of her four children to Lujan.
By February, Lujan faced charges that included not only child abuse but also tampering with evidence and contributing to child endangerment, as issued by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
Currently, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Tempe Police Department, has not provided any immediate comment regarding the ongoing investigation.
