Government Shutdown and Trump’s Plans
The recent government shutdown has put President Donald Trump’s activities in the spotlight, following a budget impasse in the Senate that has led to warnings of potential layoffs affecting “thousands” of federal employees.
The shutdown began abruptly late Wednesday night and has since taken effect. Earlier this week, Trump expressed discomfort with the shutdown, but he also hinted at the possibility that it could, in some way, lead to a more streamlined government.
“There are many benefits that could come from this shutdown,” he stated, mentioning that it could eliminate programs he believes are unnecessary. “They want open borders, and I just… they just never seem to stop.”
With layoffs looming, Trump has been in discussions with executives and budget directors to strategize on how to navigate the situation, as stated by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Government Funding and Democrats’ Concerns
The House successfully passed a short-term funding extension for fiscal year 2025 earlier in September, aiming to keep the government operational through November 21. However, the Senate failed to finalize an agreement before the October 1 deadline, resulting in the shutdown.
Democrats have voiced their frustration about being excluded from the spending negotiations, particularly concerning the expiration of enhanced Obamacare subsidies at the end of 2025.
According to Leavitt, Democrats might face “very realistic” consequences if the standoff continues.
The Trump administration and Republicans have accused Democrats of attempting to include medical benefits for undocumented immigrants, an allegation that Democrats have denied, blaming Republicans for the shutdown.
As for how long the shutdown will last, uncertainty looms as the Senate remains deadlocked.
Trump’s Efforts Toward Middle East Peace
Amid the shutdown discussions, Trump is also focused on attaining a peace agreement with Hamas while the war in Israel endures, which erupted on October 7, 2023. Trump discussed a new 20-point plan with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a recent meeting.
Trump indicated that Hamas will either need to accept this plan or brace for military action from Israel. “This plan offers them a last opportunity,” he noted in a post. He emphasized the urgent need for an agreement by Sunday evening.
Trump’s Military Engagements
On another front, Trump met with U.S. generals at Quantico, where he emphasized a revival of military strength. “Our military’s main purpose isn’t to protect feelings,” he argued, advocating for a focus on strength and discipline.
He dwelled on recent shifts toward political correctness in the military, asserting that such changes undermine effective defense strategies.
Conflict with Drug Cartels
Furthermore, the Trump administration has classified its operations against drug cartels as a “non-international armed conflict,” designating them as terrorist organizations. This declaration aligns with Trump’s constitutional authority as the commander-in-chief to protect national interests and security.
A memo was provided to Congress following strikes on designated terrorist groups as part of a broader military initiative against illegal drug trafficking, particularly from Venezuela.
