Drone Strike in Ukraine Injures Dozens
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a “savage” drone strike in the Smie area, just northeast of Kiev, on Saturday night. This incident has resulted in numerous injuries, with at least 30 reported so far.
Emergency services were promptly deployed to the site. Zelensky noted that both rail staff and passengers were present during the strike, expressing concerns over the impact on civilians. “The Russians probably didn’t realize they were shocking civilians. And this is a fear the world should not ignore,” he stated in a post.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olexi Kuleba mentioned that the attack initially struck a commuter train, followed by an “electric locomotive.” He confirmed that some passengers and railway workers suffered injuries, labeling the strike as a deliberate attack on civilians and infrastructure.
Photos and videos shared by Zelensky and Kuleba showcased the damage, clearly showing flames and smoke enveloping the train.
“Every day, Russia takes lives,” Zelensky remarked. He emphasized the need for decisive action, noting recent statements from European and American leaders. “Strong action is required,” he insisted, reflecting a growing impatience with mere verbal support.
This aerial assault follows a previous bombardment in Kiev that lasted 12 hours, claiming four lives and injuring others, which included around 500 drones and more than 40 missiles, according to officials.
Zelensky’s call for increased Western support resonates amid recent comments from former President Trump, who expressed optimism that Ukraine could reclaim its original borders, showing a shift in his tone regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin since the war began.
“I think Ukraine is in a position to fight and win everything in Ukraine in its original form,” Trump stated in a recent post, acknowledging the military and economic challenges Russia faces.
The Ukrainian leadership welcomed Trump’s shift in perspective, though they expressed surprise at the remarks. Meanwhile, Russian officials dismissed Trump’s comments, attempting to downplay Russia’s military capabilities.
Vice President Vance recently emphasized on Fox News that while the administration aspires for peace, “Russians must wake up here and embrace reality.” Despite this, ceasefire negotiations appear stalled, even after Trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska in August. Furthermore, sanctions threats have largely gone unheeded by the Kremlin.
