Police in London detain demonstrators opposing the ban on Palestine Action.

LONDON, Oct. 4 (Reuters) – The London police made several arrests on Saturday during pro-Palestine demonstrations, even though there were calls to cancel the event following a deadly synagogue attack in Manchester.

In the attack on Thursday, two individuals lost their lives, and the police fatally shot the attacker, a Syrian British man who purportedly expressed extremist views aligned with Islamist ideology.

Despite police and government requests to cancel the demonstration, organizers moved forward, arguing against the ban that targeted the Palestinian group under anti-terrorism laws.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged a moment of unity, emphasizing that this should be a time of mourning, not one for escalating tensions.

During the protest in Trafalgar Square, police arrested demonstrators who were rallying in support of Palestinian actions. Hundreds of supporters cheered as those arrested were escorted away, chanting against the police actions.

Protester Angie Zelter voiced her frustration, stating that peaceful protesters should not be detained, arguing that the ban on Palestinian activism was unjustifiable.

Additionally, six individuals were arrested at Westminster Bridge for displaying Palestinian action banners.

This demonstration is part of a larger trend of protests where many have been detained for advocating support for Palestinian causes.

Police expressed concerns that such protests divert resources needed for security, particularly around synagogues and mosques in light of the recent attack.

This incident follows a summer marked by a rise in anti-Semitic and Islamophobic sentiments in Britain, where Palestinian demonstrators have drawn attention to the conflict with Israel, leading to mixed reactions from various community members.

Both Jewish and Muslim communities in Britain have shared fears regarding their safety in the current climate.

The backdrop includes ongoing tensions in the region, with a history of conflict between Israel and Hamas, which complicates the narrative significantly.
