Missouri Man Found Dead After Sending Family Photos from Arkansas Campsite

A Missouri man was discovered dead just two days after he shared pictures from a campsite in Arkansas. The police located the 60-year-old’s body several hundred yards away from the camping area near Mount Jewish on Thursday. Signs of a struggle were evident, indicating a violent incident had occurred.

The man’s son had requested a welfare check due to his father’s lack of contact since he sent those family photos. The Newton County Sheriff’s Department reported that the injuries sustained were severe and indicative of a likely bear attack.

A search operation began on Saturday to track down a bear that may have been involved, although officials expressed uncertainty whether the bear seen in the man’s photos was the same one. Sheriff Glenn Wheeler stated, “Until the Arkansas Crime Institute completes the autopsy, we cannot say for sure it was a bear, but all evidence points in that direction.” They are working to locate the bear for examination.

Wheeler emphasized, “We know without doubt that a bear was in the vicinity of the victim, and the injuries align with those typical of a bear attack. This occurrence is quite rare.” He assured that the investigation is ongoing.

The Sam’s Throne campground has been temporarily shut down as efforts continue to locate the bear. Wheeler advised outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution: manage food storage carefully and remain wary of all bears, regardless of size. Carrying bear spray or other protective measures is encouraged.

“We aim to prevent creating an atmosphere where bears feel comfortable around humans,” Wheeler noted. “However, people should always prioritize their safety.” If confirmed, this incident would mark the second bear attack in Arkansas this year; a 72-year-old man was killed by a black bear in early September.

Notably, the last fatal bear attack in the state reportedly occurred in 1892. Keith Stevens, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Games and Fish Committee, expressed disbelief over the current events. “It’s hard to process; it feels surreal. When I heard about it, I honestly thought it was a joke,” he shared.
