Napheesa Collier calls off meeting with Cathy Engelbert as WNBA tensions rise

WNBA Tension: Collier Cancels Meeting with Commissioner Engelbert

The ongoing conflict between Nafessa Collier and WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert continues to unfold.

Collier, who has voiced her criticisms of Engelbert, has reportedly decided to cancel their scheduled meeting for next week, as noted by ESPN.

Initially, Engelbert had indicated openness to discussing the ongoing criticism surrounding the league. However, after reaching out, Collier seemed to backtrack.

A spokesperson from the league conveyed that Collier had yet to inform Engelbert directly about her intent to cancel their meeting, according to ESPN’s report.

This tension comes shortly after Engelbert’s discussions with league administrators and other WNBA players. Collier has been part of the dialogue around player concerns and has publicly challenged the commissioner.

Engelbert’s comments labeled Collier’s previous statements as “inaccurate,” asserting that their relationship was beyond repair.

In a recent press appearance, Engelbert addressed the league’s relationship with its players, asserting, “Some players feel the league doesn’t care or listen to them.” She recognized the importance of making players feel valued and acknowledged.

Engelbert also refuted Collier’s claim regarding Caitlin Clark, stating, “Clark will make nothing without the WNBA’s support,” yet emphasized Clark’s significant impact on the game.

Collier isn’t alone in her concerns. Sophie Cunningham of the Fever criticized league leadership, stating, “They don’t understand basketball.” She expressed her frustrations, calling for accountability throughout the organization.
