The Pit for Yes Event Draws Nearly 600 Attendees

The University of Pittsburgh’s “Pit for Yes” event recently brought together close to 600 individuals to engage with the gospel. University tight end Jake Overman and pastor Jason Howard discussed how student-athletes utilize their influence to share their faith during a segment on Fox & Friends.

Sports teams, like those at the University, often play a role in connecting their communities both on and off the field. This particular football team aimed to leverage that platform for spiritual outreach, sharing the message of faith on September 18th.

Overman remarked on the significant responsibility their platform offers. He mentioned, “As athletes, I think we have that platform,” while addressing co-host Ainsley Earhardt. “We didn’t want to build our name on this platform; we want to build on the name of Jesus.”

During the event, an impressive 65 attendees decided to commit to their faith, 80 were baptized, and 45 football players expressed their Christian beliefs.

Howard also emphasized the importance of guiding young people toward faith, suggesting that many lack deeper meaning in their lives. He stated, “There’s a hole in all those who only God can fill. It seems like it requires a personal relationship with Jesus, and that seems to be missing for years.”

Overman further highlighted that being a student-athlete isn’t solely about sports. He noted, “There are many on our team who follow Jesus, and for the other kids, it serves as an example when we follow Him. There’s more to your story than just being a football player.”

The “Pit for Yes” event aligns with a broader trend, reportedly reflecting a spike in student engagement with faith across the nation. Howard remarked that many students desire change in their lives and in the world, believing that true transformation comes through a connection with Jesus. He concluded, “People are hungry for God… they recognize that hope comes from Him.”
