Train Crash in Belgium Claims Lives

A passenger train collided with a minibus carrying children in Belgium on Tuesday, resulting in four fatalities, including two children, and seriously injuring five others. This tragic accident occurred during the morning rush hour near Buggenhout, which is roughly 20 miles northwest of Brussels. Officials have labeled it as one of the worst rail disasters in recent Belgian history.

According to reports, the minibus seemed to go past a closed railroad crossing before the crash, with the train traveling at approximately 125 mph. Security footage indicated that the minibus crossed the tracks just moments before the impact.

There were nine individuals on the bus at the time. The bus driver, along with their companion and two children aged 12 and 15, lost their lives, as stated by the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office. The five remaining children were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Spokesperson Lisa de Wilde mentioned that the crossing barriers were down and the warning lights were flashing. She noted that investigators are still working to uncover the precise details leading to the accident.

Federal police representative Ann Berger said it appeared the driver had disregarded the barrier at the crossing. Infrabel, the Belgian railway company, confirmed that the crossing system was operating correctly at the time.

“The force of the collision was tremendous,” remarked Frédéric Sacre from Infrabel, adding that the train operator “was unable to react in time” to brake before the impact.

Witnesses described the minibus as overturned, with its front completely crumpled, while the train itself sustained relatively minimal damage.

Officials indicated that around 100 passengers were on the train, but miraculously, none were injured. Rail services in the area were halted while emergency responders attended to the scene.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Weber expressed his deep sorrow over the horrific accident, conveying condolences to the families affected through social media.
