MSNBC makes significant move towards full independence from NBC

MSNBC Marks Major Shift Away from NBC News

On Monday, MSNBC took a significant step by announcing that it would no longer rely on correspondents and resources from NBC News, signaling a long-planned split between the two networks. This change comes after years of close collaboration as MSNBC benefitted from the talents of its sister network.

Last year, Comcast revealed plans to spin off a number of its cable networks, including MSNBC, into a new company named Versant. This new entity will house networks like CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, Syfy, and the Golf Channel.

Effective immediately, NBC News staff transitioning to MSNBC will no longer contribute to NBC News. Instead, they will embark on their new roles. As a result, MSNBC is implementing its own set of guidelines, independent from NBC’s regulations.

In another development, MSNBC has terminated the contract of analyst Matthew Dowd due to remarks he made regarding Charlie Kirk—described by the network as “unacceptable.” Meanwhile, the channel will continue to cover certain Washington, D.C.-based stories, but will take steps to fully separate operationally from NBC by October 20th. After this point, MSNBC will no longer participate in NBC-led editorial meetings, marking its first true independence in 30 years.

There are also discussions about rebranding MSNBC. At some point, it may change its name to “My Source News Opinion World,” although a timeline for this shift has not yet been shared. As part of the preparation for this transition, the network is aggressively hiring and has posted numerous job openings recently.

Despite a substantial viewer decline—MSNBC reportedly experienced a 45% drop in daily viewership and a staggering 59% decrease in advertiser interest compared to the previous year—most of the current lineup, including notable figures like Rachel Maddow, Jen Psaki, and Chris Hayes, will remain with the network.

It’s worth mentioning that NBC has retained certain key personnel, such as Steve Kornacki, a staple during election coverage, as well as Andrea Mitchell, who has taken on the role of Chief Washington Correspondent. José Díaz-Balart, once part of MSNBC, is now focused on “NBC Nightly News Saturday” and Noticias Telemundo.

This development reflects the ongoing transformation within media, as MSNBC strives to establish itself more clearly as an independent brand in the news landscape.
