Wesley Hunt Disrupts Intense Texas Senate Contest

Texas Republican Primary Shake-Up

Republican Representative Wesley Hunt from Texas has added some drama to Senator John Cornyn’s reelection efforts. Hunt, who has served two terms in the House, officially entered the Senate primary on Monday, amidst ongoing speculation regarding the Houston-area lawmakers’ impact on Senate Republican leadership. Cornyn has been a central figure in a contentious battle against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton since spring. Hunt sees himself as a strong contender for the crowded primary and the subsequent general election.

“The recent polls show a clear desire for alternatives. I believe I can provide that,” Hunt shared with The Associated Press, as reports about his Senate ambitions circulate.

Hunt has hinted that he could shake things up in this already heated contest, especially since groups linked to him have poured millions into advertising efforts across Texas this year.

This advertising blitz hits just as the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) criticized Hunt’s potential run, expressing their firm support for Cornyn’s bid for a fifth term. In a memo sent out in September, the NRSC urged potential donors to refrain from backing Hunt’s campaign and to focus on solidifying support for Cornyn.

According to leaked documents, six recent polls indicated that Cornyn leads Paxton by an average of four percentage points, claiming to surpass what they call “the statistical tie.”

“This isn’t the time for vanity projects that could jeopardize Republican resources and Senate management,” the memo asserted.

Former President Trump has mentioned that he appreciates both Cornyn and Paxton but expressed frustration over being forced to choose between them. It remains uncertain whether Hunt’s candidacy will sway Trump’s opinion on the race.

Recent months have seen Cornyn’s support diminish against Paxton, as pro-Cornyn groups have intensified their defense of his record while raising ethical concerns about Paxton.

Hunt is expected to be starting from a disadvantage; polls suggest he has a long way to go in gaining support against Cornyn and Paxton. A September survey from the One Nation group revealed that 32% of Republican voters back Cornyn, while Paxton has 31%, and Hunt has 17%.

“Senator Cornyn will continue his campaign and ultimately win this election,” asserted Matt McCowiac, a senior adviser to Cornyn’s campaign. He added, “Wesley Hunt seems to be a bit of a self-important figure. I doubt he’s earning any praise from the National Democrats as he attempts to stay relevant.”

Democrats are optimistic that the lengthy GOP primary battle might weaken the Republican candidates heading into the general election. “This is likely going to be quite a messy situation, with Cornyn, Paxton, and Hunt involved,” remarked Democratic pollster Adam Carlson.

Paxton’s team was quick to welcome Hunt’s entry, seeing it as a potential advantage for their campaign. “Wesley Hunt is a welcome addition to the race,” said Paxton adviser Nick Madducks. “Primaries can actually benefit our party and our voters. Both Wesley and General Paxton recognize that Texans deserve better than Cornyn’s disappointing record against Trump.”

There’s also scrutiny surrounding Hunt regarding his attendance in the House, as he has missed nearly 19% of votes from January 2023 to September 2025, which could raise some eyebrows among voters.
