Trump Backs Paxton in Texas Senate Runoff
On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump endorsed Ken Paxton, the Republican Texas Attorney General, in the upcoming Senate runoff against incumbent John Cornyn. This support came just as early voting was starting for the runoff elections.
Trump described Paxton as “the esteemed Attorney General of the State of Texas, America’s number one patriot,” noting his loyalty to the MAGA movement. He expressed confidence that Paxton would win the election for a third time in 2024, aiming for what would be a record-breaking turnout.
Polling from Monday indicated that Cornyn had a slight lead over Democratic contender James Talarico, while Paxton was neck-and-neck with Talarico. Another poll even showed Paxton leading Cornyn by a small margin.
Early voting for the runoff began on Monday and will conclude on Friday, with the final voting set for May 26th. In the March primary, Cornyn secured the most votes but not the majority needed to avoid a runoff, garnering support from high-profile figures like former Texas Governor Rick Perry.
Despite expectations of Trump’s backing, both Paxton and Cornyn declared their support for him prior to confirmation. After advancing to the runoff, Trump indicated he would choose one candidate and encourage the other to withdraw.
Paxton maintained, however, that he would remain in the race, irrespective of whom Trump decided to endorse. Trump himself mentioned that it wouldn’t look good for Paxton to step out, hinting that this might influence his decision.
Paxton’s campaign has faced personal challenges as well. Notably, his wife, Senator Angela Paxton, filed for divorce in July 2025, citing infidelity.
