Netflix Faces Stock Decline Amid Boycott Calls

Netflix’s stock dropped significantly again on Friday, marking its largest decline since early April.

During the week, shares plummeted by nearly 5% as Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, continued to advocate for a boycott of the streaming service.

Recent reports suggest that Netflix is encountering challenges due to its decision to stream content aimed at children that includes themes of homosexuality, featuring scenarios like boys dressed in dresses alongside their gay fathers.

According to Yahoo Finance, Musk has been vocal about the boycott, encouraging his 227 million followers on X to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, alleging that the platform is promoting transgender themes in children’s programming.

In the past few days, Musk has shared multiple posts criticizing Netflix’s content, including a message stating, “Cancel Netflix for your child’s health,” which he posted last Tuesday.

Membership numbers for Netflix started to decline last month after Hamish Steele, the creator of a Netflix children’s cartoon, made disparaging remarks about conservative figure Charlie Kirk, labeling him a “Nazi.”

Steele, noted for his work on the animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, made headlines after expressing sympathy for families affected by violence while also criticizing Kirk harshly.

His comments highlighted Netflix’s struggles, with 2022 being particularly tough, as the company saw stock prices fall by over 50%, resulting in a loss of approximately $136 billion in market value.

Netflix has since canceled Dead End: Paranormal Park after two seasons in 2023.

Musk previously mirrored such sentiments, responding to a former Department of Energy staff member who mentioned they had just canceled their Netflix subscription.
