Fire at Judge’s South Carolina Home Leads to Hospitalizations
A significant fire broke out Saturday afternoon at a South Carolina residence belonging to Circuit Court Judge Diane Goodstein, resulting in three individuals being hospitalized. Eyewitness accounts described large plumes of black smoke engulfing the four-story building.
At the time of the incident, Judge Goodstein had gone for a walk with her dog. Her husband, Arnold Goodstein—a former South Carolina senator—was inside the house when the fire ignited. He reportedly had to leap from a first-floor window to escape, sustaining serious injuries in the process, including broken bones. He was subsequently airlifted to a nearby hospital.
A neighbor recounted, “Families had to jump out of the windows and balconies to get away.” Among those hospitalized were two others, one of whom is believed to be the couple’s son. However, details on their injuries have not been made public.
The South Carolina Supreme Court acknowledged being aware of the situation involving Judge Goodstein. They noted that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is currently investigating the scene and will conduct their inquiries following the extinguishing of the fire. Local law enforcement has been alerted to enhance patrols and ensure safety in the area.
As the investigation progresses, the exact cause of the fire remains unclear. Some authorities, however, pointed to signs of an “obvious explosion.” Judge Goodstein was reported to have been walking on the beach during the early moments of the fire, while her family members were still inside the home, leading to their hasty escape.
In a notable statement, critics have linked the incident to heightened tensions surrounding political issues, suggesting it may be a consequence of right-wing extremism. Representative Daniel Goldman vocally criticized figures associated with former President Donald Trump, alleging they have incited a campaign against judges, including Goodstein. Goldman’s comments included an assertion about doxing being a real threat that judges face.
While the ongoing investigation has not confirmed arson as a cause of the fire, tensions in the political landscape have intensified discussions around the incident. Meanwhile, Stephen Miller, a former aide to Trump, pushed back against Goldman’s remarks, accusing him of distorting facts and perpetuating harmful narratives.
As of now, the investigation continues, highlighting a troubling intersection between political discord and safety concerns for public officials.
