Democrats' Preferred Fundraising Black Hole Returns for Another Senate Defeat

Amy McGrath Launches Another Senate Bid Against Mitch McConnell

Amy McGrath shared her decision on Monday to run again for the Senate seat currently held by Republican Mitch McConnell.

The former Marine fighter pilot indicated in a post on X that “Kentuckians deserve someone who is combat-tested and ready to fight for them from day one.” She joins a growing list of candidates looking to challenge McConnell, who announced his retirement back in February.

As of now, McGrath’s campaign has not commented on inquiries regarding her candidacy.

It’s worth noting that during the 2020 Kentucky Senate race, McGrath was decisively defeated by McConnell, who had a significant lead. Interestingly, she raised over $94 million compared to McConnell’s $71 million.

Additionally, McGrath has been reported to have outspent McConnell significantly during the campaign period from July to September 2020.

In a previous contest, McGrath lost to Republican Rep. Andy Barr in 2018 for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District. Barr recently announced his own plans to run for McConnell’s seat in the 2026 election.

According to campaign spokesperson Alex Berritzi, “Andy Barr and President Trump beat Amy McGrath once. They’ll do it again.” He emphasized that, despite McGrath’s significant fundraising and media presence, she was unable to secure a win.

Other Republicans vying for the open Senate seat include former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron and businessman Nate Morris. On the Democratic side, contenders include state legislator Pamela Stevenson, former CIA officer and military veteran Joel Willett, and attorney Nate Forsyth.

Throughout her political career, McGrath has made controversial statements, including comparing Trump’s 2016 victory to the September 11 attacks. She has also criticized Trump and his supporters, claiming they are “weakening America.”
