Chicago Weekend Violence Statistics Released

Preliminary crime data from this past weekend in Chicago reveals a troubling surge in violence, with 22 shootings occurring over the span of three days, resulting in 29 injuries and four fatalities.

The timeframe for these incidents stretches from 6 PM on Friday to 11:59 PM on Sunday.

Among the injured is a 16-year-old male hurt during a drive-by shooting involving a black SUV. In a separate incident, a 33-year-old man, who was shot twice in the chest following an argument, later succumbed to his injuries. Another victim, a 62-year-old, was shot in the leg while in his garage.

This alarming rise in violence comes as Illinois Governor JB Pritzker continues to oppose President Donald Trump’s proposal to send in the National Guard to help reduce violence in the city.

The weekend’s incidents also included confrontations involving federal officials, specifically related to protests outside immigration and customs enforcement facilities.

Pritzker has initiated legal action against the Trump administration to prevent the deployment of the National Guard, though his office has not responded to recent requests for comments.

Concerns Over Police Response

Chicago Police indicated they were present to oversee the incidents but stated that federal authorities were leading the investigation. However, an internal dispatch seems to suggest that police were instructed not to provide assistance when Border Patrol agents desired help.

Despite claims that they failed to respond, Chicago police have labeled this as “misinformation,” asserting their commitment to responding to threats of physical harm.

A statement from the Chicago Police Department clarified that they would act when anyone is under threat, but cases that involve federal immigration enforcement would see a CPD supervisor assessing the situation before any action is taken.

Additionally, two drivers were arrested in connection with these incidents; one was found to be in possession of a semi-automatic firearm, according to Deputy Director of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin.

Interestingly, while the number of shootings has decreased about 35% compared to the same period last year, overall crime has still risen by approximately 35% compared to 2021. This juxtaposition certainly raises questions about the city’s handling of crime and public safety.
