Former special advisor Jack Smith reportedly monitored the private communications and calls of nearly 12 Republican senators during the Capitol Riots investigation on January 6, 2021. According to documents reviewed, Smith and his “Arctic Frost” team looked into various calls, particularly focusing on senators like Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee, and others spread across states like Missouri and Alabama.
This information comes from a document recently uncovered by FBI Director Kash Patel, which is titled “Cast Assistance” and dated September 27, 2023. Notably, the document omits the names of the FBI agents involved but notes that a case ID linked to Smith’s operation has been created.
An official associated with the FBI mentioned that Smith’s team had conducted a preliminary analysis of call records associated with these lawmakers, indicating they could identify phone numbers, locations of calls, and where they were received. This could potentially relate to discussions around the legitimacy of the 2020 election.
Records were reportedly gathered after Smith’s team summoned major phone service providers in 2023. The “Arctic Frost” investigation began inside the FBI on April 13, 2022, with Smith being appointed to lead it by November of the same year.
Reports suggest that FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino briefed the senators about these surveillance activities on Capitol Hill following the discovery of these records. Bongino expressed strong sentiments, stating it felt dishonest to unveil the FBI’s past actions concerning the tracking of lawmakers for political reasons. He insisted that under their leadership, the FBI would no longer serve as a political tool.
Additionally, the newly found records stemmed from a surveillance request made by Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa. Following this, Patel and Bongino initiated a further review into the “Arctic Frost” situation, indicating the complexities surrounding it. An FBI source described the investigation as prohibited, emphasizing the need for transparency moving forward.
Patel underscored his commitment to accountability regarding any misuse of law enforcement. He firmly stated that under their oversight, the FBI would never counteract American citizens again.
Ultimately, the case against former President Donald Trump, which was part of Smith’s broader investigation into the 2020 election, has been costly, amounting to over $50 million to taxpayers.
