The troubling history of Ilhan Omar's father and his journey to America

Journalist Ashley Rindsberg notes that allegations regarding Ilhan Omar’s father and his connection to the Siad Barre regime in Somalia have often been dismissed as mere conspiracy theories by many mainstream media outlets.

However, during a discussion with Liz Wheeler on blazetv, Rindsberg highlighted evidence that contradicts that narrative.

“Omar came to America through a refugee program, which meant she had a path to U.S. citizenship,” he explained.

In fact, Rindsberg argues that this is, surprisingly, accurate.

“This information was largely ignored by those in the fact-checking realm and mainstream journalism, who labeled it as misinformation or an anti-Muslim attack,” he stated.

“Moreover, Omar’s father was actually a significant official in that regime,” he pointed out.

“Yet he refuted any association with that government, claiming he was attempting to flee from it,” Wheeler interjected.

Rindsberg further described Omar’s father as a so-called “teacher trainer,” a term that he suggested was used frequently.

While the media portrayed this role as honorable and innocuous, Wheeler suggested it raised questions—especially given the Marxist context.

“Honestly, that term doesn’t really convince me. It almost feels absurd,” she remarked.

When her father passed away in 2020, Rindsberg mentioned that various Somali and English-language outlets in Minnesota ran obituaries that were proud to acknowledge his status as a colonel in the Barre administration.

“They showed no shame in this connection. They saw it as a point of pride,” he emphasized.
