Protests Against ICE Prompt Response from Homeland Security Secretary
Following intense anti-ICE protests in Portland and Chicago over the weekend, Homeland Security Secretary Christa Noem conveyed a supportive message to federal law enforcement officials. She reassured them, despite the dangers they face, stating, “I have your back.”
Noem characterized the protestors as “violent anarchists,” claiming that they are attacking the brave law enforcement officers trying to uphold order in America. “I want all law enforcement members to know that President Trump and I stand with you,” she asserted.
Noem Highlights Threats to ICE Agents
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials are continuing their operations in Chicago as part of Operation Midway Blitz. This comes despite reports of agents being targeted by multiple vehicle attacks from what they term “domestic terrorists” over the weekend.
According to a DHS statement, among the illegal aliens apprehended were several individuals associated with violent criminal activities, including members of foreign terrorist organizations. Notably, they arrested Wilmer Alexander Gonzalez Galaban, a Venezuelan national, who has a notable criminal record involving theft and resisting arrest.
Illegal Immigrants Arrested in Chicago
Other arrests included Abrahan Alphonzo Zimenez Rodriguez, linked to vehicle theft, aggravated assault, and resisting law enforcement. Mexican national Luis Arroyo Terz also faced allegations of past convictions for fraud and child-related crimes. Uriel Alvarez Menèz was caught with a history of various offenses, including multiple DUI charges.
Federal agents found themselves obstructed by protestors Saturday, with anti-ICE crowds gathering in significant numbers. At least twelve individuals were arrested during these confrontations. Some arrests included Marimar Martinez and Anthony Ian Santos Lewis, who allegedly ambushed federal agents. Notably, Martinez was armed and has since been treated and taken into custody.
Protest Tensions and Local Government Actions
In Broadview, Illinois, tensions have escalated as protestors have been blocking officials from accessing the Immigration Processing Center. Recently, Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order that limits federal immigration agents’ access to city property for enforcement activities.
In response to the chaos, DHS has maintained that the ongoing violence from these criminal elements will not deter them from their mission to apprehend the most dangerous individuals residing in the country.
