Trump Urges Democrats to Reopen Government Amid Health Care Talks

President Trump on Monday called on Democrats to reopen the government, stating he would only negotiate extending the health care tax credit after supporting a GOP funding proposal.

In his statement on the Society of Truth, Trump seemed to change his earlier position and expressed willingness to collaborate with Democrats on health care, a significant issue in the budget debate.

“Democrats shut down the U.S. government during one of our country’s strongest economies, including a record-setting stock market. This has sadly disrupted many vital programs and services that Americans rely on,” he mentioned in a post on Truth Social.

“I’m ready to work with Democrats on their unsuccessful health care policies and other matters, but the government must be reopened first. They should, in fact, open the government tonight!” he added.

Earlier that day, Trump indicated to reporters that he was negotiating with Democrats, which could lead to positive developments regarding health care.

“And I’m referring to beneficial agreements concerning health care,” Trump said. He did not confirm whether he was meeting with Democratic leaders.

When asked about making a deal on Affordable Care Act subsidies that Democrats want to extend due to potential premium hikes, Trump indicated his openness.

“If we reach the right agreement, I’ll proceed with it. Absolutely,” he stated.

“The issue lies with the subsidies. That’s a major problem with Obamacare—wasting billions of dollars on numerous subsidies. We could achieve much better health care than we currently have. We’re in discussions. I can’t guarantee it will happen,” he added.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries pushed back against Trump’s claims, stating he wasn’t aware of any Democrats engaging with the President or his administration regarding government reopening or health care issues.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also addressed Trump’s assertions, clarifying that Senate Democrats are not engaged in such talks but are open to participating.

“Trump’s assertions aren’t accurate, but if he’s genuinely willing to collaborate with Democrats, we’re ready to talk,” said Schumer.

The government faced shutdown on Wednesday after Senate Democrats and Republicans failed to secure a funding agreement, with Democrats insisting on extending Affordable Care Act grants expiring at the year’s end.

If no action is taken, enhancements to tax credits from the Covid-19 pandemic will cease, leading to average premium increases of over 75% for Affordable Care Act enrollees, according to health policy research group KFF.

Democrats argue that the extensions should be included in the short-term funding legislation, while GOP leaders maintain that those discussions can occur later and should be treated separately from government funding.
