45-year-old man killed by girlfriend's teenage son in NYC apartment, according to police and sources

A New York City sanitary worker nearing retirement was reportedly decapitated by his girlfriend’s troubled teenage son in Staten Island on Monday. This shocking incident occurred at the victim’s home around 4:20 PM, following a distressing 911 call.

The police arrived to find the victim, who had suffered a violent death, already pronounced dead at the scene. His girlfriend’s 19-year-old son was taken into custody but has yet to face any formal charges, according to sources and friends.

This victim, a Department of Sanitation worker, had been dealing with significant vision loss, which forced him into a life with a disability. His longtime friend shared this heartbreaking news outside the taped-off area where the tragedy unfolded.

It appears that the teenager, known for his mental health struggles, confided in his sister about committing a “bad” act shortly after she returned home from school.

She stumbled upon a horrifying scene, discovering blood trails that led to the bathroom where the decapitated body of the 45-year-old man lay, a knife still nearby. Sources indicate that this is a domestic incident, and the family has a history of domestic disturbances.

As police continued their investigation, neighbors gathered at the scene, expressing disbelief. Louis Ortiz, a close friend of the victim, and his wife Donna rushed over upon hearing the news on television.

“Seeing it on TV was surreal; I had to come here to believe it,” Louis expressed. “He didn’t deserve this. He was about to retire, just wanting to enjoy life.” Just days earlier, he had helped the victim buy a truck for his girlfriend because of his deteriorating vision.

Louis described the victim as an incredibly kind person who enjoyed fishing, stating, “He was the nicest guy in the world.” He also mentioned the challenges the couple faced with their blended family over the years.

Despite knowing about the teen’s mental health issues, Louis noted that he often found the boy to be polite and friendly, especially during their shared gaming sessions. He remarked on the ongoing struggles the teen faced at school, emphasizing a need for improved mental health support from the city.

Donna, a healthcare worker, reiterated that signs of trouble had been apparent for some time and suggested their friend might still be alive if the city had better mental health resources available.

Neighbor Mariano Castro stated he never witnessed any conflicts between the victim and his girlfriend’s son, pointing out a recent peaceful interaction when he saw them together in the yard. “It’s just crazy,” he said, reflecting the shock of the community.

The investigation into the incident continues.
