Air Traffic Control Issues at Hollywood Burbank Airport

On Monday night, Hollywood Burbank Airport faced a significant challenge—hours without any air traffic controllers due to government closures. The situation lingered between 4:15 PM and 10 PM local time, during which the operations were overseen by the Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Management Facility based in San Diego.

This staffing shortage led to multiple flight cancellations, and by 5 PM, the average delay for flights at the airport had ballooned to two and a half hours, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

California Governor Gavin Newsom took to social media to express his frustrations, stating, “Thanks @RealdonaldTrump! Burbank Airport will have zero air traffic controllers from 4:15 PM to 10 PM today due to government closures.”

Concerns Over Air Travel Disruptions

The disruptions have raised alarms among airlines, who are warning that ongoing government closures could have wider implications on flight schedules and overall air traffic management.

The airport, however, did not provide immediate comments following requests on Tuesday. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted the toll this situation takes on air traffic controllers. “In an already stressful job, this shutdown puts more stress on our controllers,” he noted during a press briefing in New Jersey. He mentioned that they were tracking sick leaves and addressing delays stemming from staff shortages.

He further stated, “Our priorities… I want to see your flight not delayed. I don’t want to cancel you. But our top priority is safety. So if there are additional sick calls, we will have to adjust the flow accordingly.” Duffy emphasized that, despite the pressure, controllers need to be present for work as they play a crucial role in ensuring safety. “The problem is they show up for work, but we’re not going to get paid,” he said.

Calls to End the Shutdown

Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Control Association, is pushing for an end to the government closures. “We need to finish this shutdown,” he emphasized, urging that it divert attention from the FAA and its vital safety responsibilities.

As tensions rise, it’s clear that the effects of government shutdowns are felt far beyond the halls of Congress, impacting everyday travelers and air traffic safety alike.
