Democratic Governors’ Race Heats Up with Friendship at Its Core
This year, two Democratic senators are vying for the governor’s seat in their respective states. Their friendship dates back to their initial election in 2018, which has only grown stronger since. Virginia’s Abigail Spanberger and New Jersey’s Mikie Sherrill have emerged as notable figures in the Democratic Party, especially as they pursue this gubernatorial victory amidst some internal struggles within the party post-2024 presidential election.
The bond between Spanberger and Sherrill, formed during their first term in Congress, is quite remarkable. They’ve shared experiences, such as organizing together as freshman lawmakers at Capitol Hill. Sherrill expressed her gratitude, saying, “I feel incredibly lucky. When we entered Congress together, who would have thought the only statewide race would be between good friends?”
As they approach the final stretch of the election campaign, Sherrill faced criticism, being labeled as “New Jersey’s Kamala Harris.”
Both Spanberger, at 46, and Sherrill, at 53, were elected to Congress in 2018 and quickly bonded, beginning their friendship during their legislative campaigns, where Sherrill’s sister volunteered for Spanberger. Before entering politics, Spanberger worked with the CIA, while Sherrill served as a Navy pilot. Their shared experiences have shaped their focus on national security in their campaigning.
Sherrill reminisced, saying, “We had a vision of wandering around,” touching on their early days in Congress.
There’s been drama in the governor’s race, including allegations of leaked information and questionable tactics involving military records. Spanberger added a light-hearted note, stating, “In the end, I think it’s fun!”
After they both moved to D.C. and began sharing an apartment, Spanberger highlighted the loneliness of being away from their families, noting that it can sometimes feel isolating where “the only sound is your own.” She also reflected on how being part of a group of female lawmakers helped enhance their experience in Congress.
The two expressed a special connection because they’re both the oldest of three sisters, which influences how they work together in the political world. Spanberger launched her campaign for the Virginia governorship in 2023, aiming to succeed in holding her position, while Sherrill is contending with Republican Jack Chatterelli in New Jersey, aiming to take over from Governor Phil Murphy, who cannot run again.
The upcoming election is seen as pivotal, possibly establishing both Spanberger and Sherrill as leading Democratic figures, especially following the party’s struggles after the 2024 election. This situation arose when President Biden abruptly halted his reelection efforts, sending shockwaves through the party as they searched for new leadership heading into the midterms and beyond.
Both campaigns were contacted regarding their friendship and ongoing campaigns, though no immediate response was provided.
