Giannis Antetokounmpo seems to have no issue spending time at Madison Square Garden.
This two-time MVP is eyeing the Knicks as a potential contender amidst the uncertain future with the Bucks, according to ESPN.
Back in August, discussions took place between the Knicks and Bucks regarding a possible blockbuster trade, but the talks reportedly stalled during what was meant to be an exclusive negotiation period.
Rumors are swirling that a deal involving Antetokounmpo could have significant repercussions for the NBA, stirring interest in both the Knicks and Bucks as the new season approaches.
It’s been suggested that Knicks President Leon Rose has a strong interest in players like Giannis, much like many in the league. Perhaps he could envision the star fitting into his long-term plans for the team.
However, moving Antetokounmpo would necessitate the Bucks deciding to part with their 2021 NBA Finals MVP.
Recently, Antetokounmpo and one of his agents met with Jon Horst, the Bucks’ general manager, in Greece. This meeting followed Horst’s choice to pursue former Pacers player Myles Turner instead of aiming for Damian Lillard.
While Horst believes he has assembled a team capable of winning the Eastern Conference, Antetokounmpo has openly questioned that and hinted at a possible desire to move on.
His U.S. representative, Alex Saratsis, has reported that there is substantial interest in Antetokounmpo, particularly from the Knicks, who seem determined to enhance their roster.
Despite the reported reluctance from the Bucks to pursue a deal, sources indicated that they feel the Knicks haven’t made enticing enough offers to continue negotiations.
ESPN noted that both the Knicks and other teams believe that if the Bucks were serious about trading Antetokounmpo, he could end up at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks have already made significant investments in players like Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, utilizing much of their trade assets this offseason, while extending Bridges’ contract.
Currently, they hold a first-round pick, three pick swaps, and eight second-round picks, according to ESPN.
For now, the situation with Antetokounmpo remains unresolved as discussions do not seem to be progressing.
With just a year left on his contract, considerations will become more pressing as he could be eligible to sign a four-year extension worth $275 million with Milwaukee.
The Bucks currently hold the seventh-best odds for winning the Eastern Conference at 15/1, placing them 14th overall in championship odds at 50/1.
Last month, Antetokounmpo expressed his commitment to joining a team that presents a genuine opportunity for a championship, noting, “Basketball shouldn’t end in April just to avoid standing still.”
