Rep. Wesley Hunt Pledges to 'Defend Texas' as He Joins Senate Race

Wesley Hunt Launches Senate Campaign in Texas

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) officially kicked off his campaign for the U.S. Senate on Monday, showcasing a video that highlights his family, military background, and supporters. In this, he expressed a commitment to keep the focus on Texas issues instead of personal rivalries.

In his announcement, Hunt emphasized the importance of the race being about the state and its conservative values, stating, “This race must be more than a personal revenge between two candidates.” He elaborated on his congressional record and his priorities, declaring himself the “most conservative Texas Senator” in Congress and reflecting on his early support for President Trump. “I’ve heard from Texans. My beliefs don’t waver, and I’m ready to act in the best interest of our state. I will fight for Texas just as hard as I did for my country,” he asserted.

The campaign video opens by asking, “Who is Wesley Hunt?” It features endorsements and stories from family, friends, and colleagues. His wife, Emily Hunt, shared her admiration for his determination, saying he “is not afraid of challenge” and is ready to fight back.

Wesley’s brother, Rendon Hunt, recounted moments of danger when Wesley stood firm, earning the trust of his comrades to help them return home safely. A fellow veteran, Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ), praised him for his integrity and commitment, while community leader Larry Chapman noted Hunt as “one of the greatest lawmakers” in the region.

Hunt is entering a competitive race, facing off against Attorney General Ken Paxton and Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primaries. Former Democrat Colin Allred has also announced another Senate campaign after his loss to Senator Ted Cruz in 2024, having spent a significant amount on his previous run.

Recent polls show Cornyn with solid approval ratings, but Paxton, who has faced challenges due to his involvement in bipartisan gun control talks, remains competitive, especially with backing from conservatives loyal to Trump.

Over recent months, Hunt has been active in Congress, questioning Medicaid expansions that benefit undocumented immigrants. He’s also proposed a resolution to designate July as “American Pride Month,” which calls for a celebration of American history and values.

In a prior interview, Hunt responded to comments made by former President Obama, asserting that there’s a double standard in how political violence against conservatives is perceived. He articulated concerns about how Democrats and the media have treated conservatives over the past decade.

His political action committee, Hellfire Pack, gained attention in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential race, particularly during the first presidential debate, where they aired ads criticizing President Biden’s track record on race. In summarizing the message, Hunt remarked that if Republican presidents had similar histories, they would be canceled or expelled by the media.
