DHS claims Illinois Governor Pritzker is sharing a range of falsehoods

DHS Accuses Illinois Governor of False Claims Regarding Federal Law Enforcement

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has criticized Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for what they describe as “false slander” over his statements about federal law enforcement’s activities in Chicago. Pritzker has released a list claiming he would “expose” what he believes are misleading federal operations in the area.

This comes alongside a federal lawsuit aimed at preventing the Trump administration from deploying numerous National Guard units from Illinois and Texas into Chicago and nearby cities. DHS Deputy Commissioner Tricia McLaughlin made a pointed statement to Pritzker, suggesting he should venture out into the city. “If JB Pritzker actually walks through the streets of his city,” she said, “he’ll see domestic terrorists and violent mobs attacking police officers and contributing to violent crime, which, quite frankly, stems from his own policies.”

DHS emphasized their intent to correct the record concerning what they view as Pritzker’s falsehoods, defending the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs Border Protection (CBP) agents against his allegations.

Pritzker Responds with Legal Action

At a press conference, Pritzker expressed his views, stating there was an “unconstitutional federal invasion of Illinois.” He claimed that figures such as Donald Trump and Christy Noem have militarized law enforcement agents in Chicago, which he alleged has led to violence and disorder.

DHS countered that the situation is not a violation of the Constitution, arguing that President Trump has the lawful authority to protect federal facilities from attacks. They pointed out the necessity of securing federal properties, regardless of their location, whether that be an ICE facility in Broadview or elsewhere.

Pritzker also mentioned specific instances of violence, referring to operations where law enforcement’s actions led to damage and injury during arrests, claiming chaos ensued in neighborhoods.

Federal Operations and Arrests

In response, DHS noted the context of their operations in Chicago, mentioning that recent activities have led to the arrests of 37 illegal aliens from various countries, including Venezuela and Nigeria. They asserted that claims suggesting they target U.S. citizens are unfounded, as ICE does not arrest U.S. citizens unless obstructing law enforcement.

The governor’s office has not yet commented on the recent statements from DHS.

In light of a tragic incident earlier this month involving a fatal altercation with an illegal immigrant, Pritzker reflected on the implications of these law enforcement operations, while DHS mentioned the heightened risks faced by their agents, citing a significant rise in attacks.

Pritzker finished by addressing accusations of racial profiling, sharing that the federal actions have affected innocent residents, including the elderly and children, in unsettling ways.

DHS maintains that its measures are necessary for maintaining order and protecting officers, despite the complexities and conflicts arising from these controversial operations in Chicago.
