Concerns Arise Over Jonathan Gannon’s Sideline Conduct

The Arizona Cardinals’ coach, Jonathan Gannon, is in the spotlight for his intense sideline demeanor, particularly following a critical play by running back Emari DeMercado during a recent game. An incident occurred when DeMercado lost possession of the ball before scoring, leading to a disappointing 22-21 defeat against the Tennessee Titans. The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) is reportedly assessing the situation regarding Gannon’s reaction.

While no formal investigation has been initiated yet, it’s noted that Gannon may have made physical contact with DeMercado at least once during this tense exchange.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, DeMercado’s fumble cost what could have been a decisive touchdown, allowing the Titans to clinch their first win of the season.

After the game, Gannon extended an apology to DeMercado. “I acknowledged to the team that I need to learn from that moment,” he reflected. “I’m working on maintaining my composure because I need to focus on problem-solving during the game. That’s just not who I want to be as a coach.” He continued, mentioning that mistakes are part of the game and contributed to their loss.

The controversy raises an important question: did Gannon indeed strike the running back after his blunder? It’s worth mentioning that this type of incident previously led to a $50,000 fine for former Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians in 2022.

DeMercado had a chance to secure the game for the Cardinals with a 72-yard run, but he ultimately fumbled before reaching the end zone, resulting in a touchback.

Video footage appears to show Gannon approaching DeMercado when it seems there might have been some physical contact, possibly with the running back’s shoulder pad as he walked by.

In the game’s final moments, the Titans scored 16 unanswered points, turning the tide unexpectedly against Arizona.

Gannon mentioned that he believed the Cardinals needed to execute better, expressing a desire for improvement. He confirmed that DeMercado would not face repercussions for his mistake and chose not to bench him during the match.

Looking ahead, the Cardinals, who have struggled after a 2-0 start, hope to regain their footing this Sunday against the Colts in Indianapolis.
