Rich Paul believes that his agency has been affected negatively due to NBA players’ animosity toward LeBron James.
In a recent discussion with Max Kellerman on a podcast, Paul, who founded Klutch Sports Group over ten years ago, shared that his business suffers because of how some players perceive the Lakers star.
He remarked, “I’ve seen current and former NBA players interfere in the recruiting process of a player who isn’t even their son and deliberately steer him toward another agency out of disdain for LeBron. I’m his representative, so you can imagine the consequences.”
This unexpected comment emerged while Paul and Kellerman were analyzing the results of the NBA playoffs’ opening game and the surrounding discussions from both players and media.
Paul claimed that the public seems to give Nuggets center Nikola Jokic a break that they don’t extend to James during the latter’s postseason defeat against the Timberwolves.
“The reason you don’t hear much about Jokic is that people aren’t rooting against him,” Paul stated.
“When LeBron loses, however, it’s a different story. People—especially some players—seem to revel in his losses. It’s puzzling, really, but it’s a pattern. That’s just how I see it.”
While Paul didn’t specify the reasons behind the dislike for James among some league members, he hinted that it runs deeper than mere envy of James’ success.
“In our community, there’s a tendency to feel satisfaction when someone experiences setbacks due to their own shortcomings,” he explained.
“That mindset is ingrained in us. Athletes experience it, too.”
Paul emphasized that while he welcomes criticism, there seems to be a more significant issue when it comes to James.
“I’m saying it’s more complex than that,” he concluded.
