St. Francis of Assisi Relic to Be Exhibited in Italy in 2026
Next year, a relic associated with St. Francis of Assisi, one of history’s most cherished saints, will be showcased in Italy.
As reported by Vatican News on October 4th, during St. Francis’ East Feast Day, the artefact will be displayed at St. Francis’ Cathedral in Assisi. This exhibition is set to take place from February 22nd to March 22nd, 2026. During this time, Francis’ body will be relocated from its tomb in the basement to the foot of the Pope Altar in the cathedral’s lower church.
Interestingly, Italian treasures, some dating back 2,300 years, were unearthed during sewer system installations in the area.
At the conclusion of the worship route, each visitor will receive a small token from the Franciscan community.
Officials are expecting a substantial number of pilgrims and tourists to attend, and those interested must register through a complimentary online booking system.
Accessible routes for disabled visitors will also be in place.
The Pope has given his approval for this exhibition, which has garnered significant attention since Pope Francis chose his name in honor of St. Francis, who lived from 1181 to 1226. He is widely recognized for founding the Franciscan Order, a group committed to aiding the needy and embracing a modest lifestyle.
Known as the patron saint of animals, his tomb in Assisi became a prominent pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages and is likely to attract even more visitors again soon.
Sacro Convento, representing the Franciscan community at the Cathedral, noted that this event will occur nearly 800 years after St. Francis’ death.
He described the exhibition as “an extraordinary gift” and a “deep invitation to prayer,” highlighting its potential to inspire people through the living example of the gospel.
While the cathedral has been contacted for details on which artefacts will be included in the display, there hasn’t been a response yet.
