Schumer Urges Trump to Stay in Shutdown Fight
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is reportedly calling on Trump to remain involved in the ongoing government shutdown struggle, as indicated in a memo obtained by Axios.
The Senate Majority PAC (SMP), a significant supporter of Senate Democrats, cautioned that allowing pressure to lessen on Republicans would be a significant error. The memo emphasizes how Democrats’ commitment to protecting affordable healthcare is resonating with voters. As the shutdown enters its seventh day—marking the fourth longest in U.S. history—federal employees and various government programs are facing disruptions as benefits and payments begin to lapse.
Schumer suggests that the shutdown presents a political chance to shape the narrative around healthcare costs and inflation in the upcoming 2026 elections, believing it will attract Democratic support. According to Axios, the memo advises party members to stay focused.
A recent SMP-commissioned poll revealed that 52% of surveyed voters point fingers at President Trump and Congressional Republicans for the shutdown, while only 40% assign blame to Democrats. Additionally, 62% of participants deemed it more crucial to prevent increases in health insurance premiums rather than expedite the end of the shutdown.
The same poll showed that 78% of Americans favor expanding the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced tax credits, a sentiment shared by 92% of Democrats and even 59% of Republicans.
SMP did not respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, SMP President JB Poersch highlighted that the health care debate is an essential one, asserting that voters in the political center appear to be leaning towards Democrats. Poersch emphasized the party’s unified message, discouraging acceptance of the GOP’s negotiations conditional on reopening the government.
He remarked, “By firmly establishing our position, Democrats are showcasing a clear contrast in their approach,” adding that Democrats are advocating for affordable healthcare and economic security while Republicans are perceived as supporting chaos and policies that elevate prices.
SMP spokesperson Lauren French echoed this sentiment, stating, “Rather than allowing families to be abandoned, Donald Trump and Senate Republicans are keeping the government in limbo.”
On another note, President Trump has warned of the potential permanent removal of some federal employees “in four or five days” through management and budget powers if the shutdown lingers. He told reporters in the Oval Office, “If this continues, it’s significant, and many of those jobs will never come back. We’ll be much closer to a balanced budget.”
