Conservative Journalist Threatens Legal Action After Arrest in Portland
A conservative journalist who was arrested during a clash with Antifa protesters in Portland is now considering legal action against local police and officials.
Footage from the incident indicated that the journalist was being assaulted before he could defend himself. Three individuals were arrested by police, including the journalist, but the district attorney later dismissed the charges against him.
In a letter addressed to the police department, the journalist’s lawyer claimed that the arrests were unjustified and were acts of retaliation for the journalist’s attempts to uncover the realities of Portland’s situation.
“This arrest seemed to be coordinated by higher-ups rather than the line officers, which raises serious constitutional concerns,” the letter asserted. It requests an apology within a week and demands an investigation into the circumstances of the arrest.
Moreover, the letter points out that this incident appears to be a part of a broader trend of the Portland Police Department suppressing conservative journalism and political expression.
In the correspondence, the journalist threatens to take further action if their demands are not addressed. He has also publicly called for access to records about any collaboration between the police and Antifa.
The district attorney stated in a press release that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to charge the journalist with disorderly conduct, although charges against the other two individuals arrested remain in place. The DA clarified that “free speech does not equate to the freedom to commit crimes, regardless of political ideology.”
Attempts to gain comments from the City Attorney’s Office regarding the situation were not immediately successful.
