Tragic Death of Missouri State Trooper

In a heartbreaking incident, a Missouri state trooper lost his life while assisting in a mutual aid operation in Mississippi County. Officer Henry Franklin, aged 41, was fatally shot on October 6 while helping the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office execute a warrant at a home.

This warrant was related to Nathan B. Peters, 36, who was wanted in connection with a murder that took place earlier the same day, as stated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The Sikeston Department of Public Safety (SDPS) reported that Franklin, a member of their tactical team, responded to this mutual aid request to locate and apprehend Peters.

Authorities indicated that Peters had barricaded himself and began shooting at officers shortly after 7:35 p.m., during which Officer Franklin was struck. To assist, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop C SWAT team was called in.

When law enforcement entered the residence around 12:35 a.m. on Tuesday, they discovered Peters deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Franklin joined the SDPS in June 2013 and had also served in the Army National Guard. He was well-known in the community as the handler of a K-9 named Odin, who was a loyal companion.

SDPS Director James McMillen expressed deep sorrow in a Facebook post, stating, “Our department has suffered an unimaginable loss. Officer Franklin was not only a dedicated public servant but also a husband, father, son, and brother. We ask that you keep his family and our department in your thoughts as they face this challenging time.”

Born and raised in Charleston, Missouri, Franklin’s contributions will be remembered. To honor his service and sacrifice, Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow has ordered all flags in the city to be flown at half-staff until after Franklin’s funeral. SDPS had not provided additional comments at the time of this report.
