Matt Van Epps, supported by Trump, triumphs in Tennessee GOP congressional primary

Trump’s Influence in Tennessee Primary

On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump’s political strength became evident as his endorsed candidate won a competitive Republican primary for a vacant seat in Tennessee. Matt Van Epps, who previously led the Tennessee Department of General Services, emerged victorious among 11 contenders for the 7th Congressional District, as reported by the Associated Press.

Van Epps is now positioned as the leading candidate in the general election scheduled for December 2nd, following the resignation of former Republican Rep. Mark Green, who left his post to join the private sector.

The primary results heavily reflected Trump’s endorsement, even though this support came after early voting had already concluded. Van Epps’ main opponents included state Reps. Jodi Barrett, Gino Balso, and Lee Reeves, who ultimately suspended his campaign to back Van Epps in light of Trump’s endorsement.

Emerging Party Dynamics

There seems to be a growing expectation that loyalty to Trump will be a significant factor in the race. Interestingly, Barrett, who claimed to be the “most conservative state lawmaker” in Tennessee’s history, received backing from the political arm of the House Freedom Caucus. They made substantial investments in the primary efforts.

President Trump characteristically praised Van Epps, stating, “Matt knows the wisdom and courage it takes to protect our country, support our great service members and veterans, and ensure peace through strength.” Van Epps expressed his appreciation by calling the endorsement “an incredible honor.”

In the race’s backdrop, Trump is noted to have led by about 20 points in the previous year’s presidential election in this district, which stretches across midwestern Tennessee from Kentucky to Alabama. Van Epps, who holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Army National Guard and is a former Army helicopter pilot, also garnered support from notable House Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio.

Meanwhile, on the Democratic front, four candidates, including state Reps. Vincent Dixie, Aftin Behn, Beau Mitchell, and businessman Darden Copeland, are contending for their party’s nomination.

Currently, Republicans maintain a slight edge in the House with a 219-213 majority, though two seats remain vacant. The political landscape is certainly shifting, with interest in how these upcoming races will play out as the election approaches.
