Kentucky Sues Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns

Kentucky has taken legal action against Roblox, claiming that the platform has allowed child predators to operate freely and has exposed children to disturbing content, such as a simulation depicting the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

The lawsuit was filed on Monday by Attorney General Russell Coleman. He argues that Roblox, which boasts 111 million active monthly users, lacks sufficient protections for children, effectively transforming the site into a “playground” for potential predators.

Concerns also revolve around inadequate age verification processes, which allegedly enable predators to create accounts, pose as children, and lure their victims in large multiplayer online environments.

Roblox is particularly popular among children in the U.S., with about two-thirds of kids aged 9 to 12 regularly using the platform. This broad access is said to have led to the proliferation of graphic, violent, and sexual content.

In a recent example highlighted in the lawsuit, prosecutors noted the emergence of the “assassination simulator” shortly after a tragic event involving Kirk at a university in Utah last month. The simulation reportedly features vivid, bloody animations of a shooting.

The lawsuit claims, “Roblox facilitates easy access for predators to children, allowing them to transition from online contact to physical meetings, resulting in harassment, human trafficking, and sexual assault of minors.”

During a press conference with Coleman, a mother of three from Kentucky, Courtney Norris, shared how she initially believed Roblox to be a safe online space for her kids. However, she later realized, perhaps too late, that it was more akin to the “wild west” of the internet for children.

Coleman has called for the company to implement stronger age verification systems, content filters, and enhanced parental controls.

This lawsuit is one of several challenges Roblox has faced recently. In August, Louisiana sued the platform, and a separate lawsuit was filed in Iowa after a 13-year-old girl was reportedly introduced to an adult predator who later trafficked and assaulted her across multiple states. A mother from North Carolina also launched a lawsuit, claiming that her daughters were sexually exploited through Roblox.

In their defense, Roblox has responded to the allegations, stating, “We have strict safety measures in place, including advanced AI models and dedicated teams monitoring the platform 24/7 for inappropriate content.” They acknowledged that no system is perfect and emphasized ongoing improvements, having added 100 new safety measures this year, including facial age estimation technology.

Additionally, Roblox clarified that users under 13 cannot directly message others unless parental controls are adjusted, ensuring a layer of protection on the platform.
