Florida dentist murderer Charlie Adelson reacts angrily towards Leon County Jail staff after a door injures his toe.

A Florida dentist, facing a life sentence for orchestrating his ex-brother-in-law’s murder, expressed his frustration in an outburst at the Leon County Jail. Just days before a court incident involving his mother, Charlie Adelson yelled at jail staff, claiming one of them injured his toe while he awaited medication on August 31.

“That was really dumb,” he said, as recorded on body camera footage from the scene. “You opened the hatch while I was standing barefoot here, and you slammed the door on my toe.”

Adelson, 47, who was being held in jail during his mother Donna Adelson’s murder trial, seemed to escalate the situation by demanding a supervisor’s presence. “Bring me the lieutenant, and I’ll show you how stupid you are. Don’t you know what it means to be an idiot?” he asserted.

He criticized the staff member’s methods, saying, “Open the hatch like a normal person, like someone with a brain.” His complaints continued, tweeting, “The hatch is open.”

The nurse involved recounted the event to her superiors, saying they had approached to pass medication when Adelson was obstructing the door. She remarked, “I unlocked the door, pushed it open, and he said he hurt his toe,” suggesting he should have a medical evaluation.

Meanwhile, Adelson explained that he wasn’t badly injured but felt annoyed. He confronted a lieutenant about the usual practice of using the hatch instead of opening the full door.

Onlookers described his behavior as indicative of a privileged lifestyle, considering he seemed unable to adapt to his new circumstances. Legal expert Melba Pearson commented, “It’s the spectacle of an entitled, privileged brat.” She sensed that Adelson might still see himself as living in luxury, despite his incarceration status.

“He’s not special; he needs to learn respect and humility,” Pearson added, alluding to the contrasting reality he must face.

Adelson was convicted in December 2023 for his part in the 2014 murder of Dan Markel, a Florida State University law professor, amid a contentious divorce and custody battle with Adelson’s sister. He, along with his then-girlfriend Katherine Magbanua, hired two associates to carry out the murder, culminating in Markel’s tragic death.

Subsequently, Magbanua’s ex-husband was sentenced to life for his role, while Donna Adelson faced her own trial and conviction shortly after, reacting emotionally to the verdict in court.
