WestJet adds fee for reclining seats in updated cabin design

WestJet Updates Cabin Interiors with New Seating Options

WestJet, the Canadian airline, has rolled out updated cabin interiors for its Boeing aircraft, offering three distinct seat classes and charging extra for reclining seats.

The announcement was made on September 23, and the airline plans to have the initial 43 revamped Boeing 737-8 Maxes and 737-800s ready for passenger travel by the end of October.

According to WestJet’s press release, “The modern cabin experience provides a bright, airy atmosphere with new seating, an improved design featuring adjustable headrests, better cushioning, and a fixed recline feature aimed at preserving personal space.”

The available seat classes are Premium, Enhanced Comfort, and Economy. If passengers prefer chairs that can recline, they’ll need to choose the Premium option, of which there are just 12 per aircraft.

WestJet has indicated that the rear of cabin rows 20-31 will have the least legroom available.

Samantha Taylor, the airline’s executive vice president and chief experience officer, mentioned that “WestJet has been a pioneer in making air travel more accessible to Canadians, mainly by keeping fares low.”

She added, “We aim to refresh our cabin layout to cater to the varied preferences of our guests. We anticipate our travelers will appreciate this range of options, whether they opt for premium seating with added amenities or a budget-friendly ticket with less room.”
