Florida Bill Proposes Naming Roads After Charlie Kirk

Florida Representative Kevin Steele has put forth a proposal that mandates higher education institutions in the state to rename their streets in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. This bill has some considerable implications, as it stipulates withholding state funds from any institution that fails to comply.

The text states, “State funds shall be withheld from a State university or University of Florida System institution that does not redesignate a road or portion of a road listed in subsections (1) and (2) within 90 days after the effective date of this act.”

Charlie Kirk’s Legacy

Charlie Kirk, a notable figure in the conservative movement, was tragically assassinated last September during an event at Utah Valley University. Steele expressed pride in introducing HB 113, stating, “I aim to ensure that his legacy lives on for future generations who attend our schools and are exposed to diverse ideas.”

Some specific examples cited in the proposal include plans for streets like College Drive at the University of Florida to be renamed Charlie James Kirk Drive, as well as adjustments to Stadium Road and West Tampa Bay Boulevard in various institutions.

A notable development is that the Lake County Board of Commissioners has already dedicated a stretch of road as the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway. This highway, a part of the Wellness Way between U.S. 27 and the Orange County line, marks the first official recognition of Kirk following his assassination.
