Quarterback Shuffle in the NFL: Sanders on Flacco’s Departure
Just like that, two quarterbacks are gone, leaving only one option. The Browns made a surprising trade on Tuesday, sending Joe Flacco to the Bengals, which significantly impacts Chedure Sanders’ chances of starting in an NFL game.
After the Flacco trade, which involved Kenny Pickett heading to the Raiders during the preseason, Sanders finds himself backing up rookie Dillon Gabriel. It’s been a whirlwind for him.
Reflecting on Flacco’s mentorship, Sanders expressed gratitude for the support he received during his rookie season. “He was someone I leaned on for advice, and he was really helpful during my time here in Cleveland,” Sanders shared on FOX 8 News. “Now everyone has their own path to follow, and I’m genuinely happy for him.”
Interestingly, there’s a 17-year age gap between Flacco, who is 40, and Sanders, who is just 23. Yet, they connected quickly. Flacco, a former Super Bowl champion with the Ravens, brought a refreshing perspective, blending his experience with the youthful energy of Sanders.
Earlier this year, Flacco had nice words for the young quarterback, calling him “great” and noting how enjoyable their meetings were together.
Upon meeting Flacco post-trade, Sanders admitted he was surprised by how fast things had changed. “He adapts to any situation. It’s a bit amusing—he’s older, but he brings a youthful energy,” Sanders remarked. “I aim to create a positive atmosphere around me, always striving to be the upbeat one. People tell me I’m a genuinely nice guy.”
With Flacco’s transition to the Bengals, a clear opportunity has opened for Sanders to make his debut. Previously the third-string quarterback, he’s now moved up due to Gabriel stepping into the starter role.
As the Browns focus on building for the future, they seem excited about the potential for Sanders to take the field this season. With a current record of 1-4, it’s clear the team is embracing a new direction, and missing Gabriel isn’t seen as a setback.
Sanders made his first start in London last Sunday, where, despite a 21-17 loss, he completed 19 out of 33 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns. He’s expressed confidence in his abilities, even if backup quarterbacks tend to keep such feelings under wraps.
Looking ahead, fans are eager to see how things unfold for Sanders, especially considering he may get the chance to play against Flacco when the Bengals and Browns meet in Week 18.
“We’re always prepared,” Sanders stated confidently.
