Media's Story on Climate Change Crumbles After Man Charged with Starting LA Fire

In January, media outlets quickly attributed the Pacific Palisades fire in Los Angeles to climate change, but it has now been revealed that an arsonist was responsible. Jonathan Linderknecht, a 29-year-old, faces charges for deliberately igniting the fire just after midnight on New Year’s Day. The blaze devastated over 6,000 structures across more than 23,000 acres, leading to the deaths of 12 individuals.

Some major news organizations—like the Associated Press, CNN, and the New York Times—were quick to link the fire’s rapid spread to climate change. For instance, the New York Times suggested that the issues of “soaring temperatures” and an “overheating Earth” played significant roles in causing wildfires.

On January 9, the Times pointed out that rising temperatures, severe droughts, and drying vegetation all contributed to exacerbating the situation, blaming human-induced greenhouse gas emissions for more frequent and severe fires. They noted that as climate conditions worsen, the danger of such wildfires increases significantly.

According to the Associated Press, the severe weather that impacted the nation resulted from climate change, emphasizing strong winds and rising temperatures as culprits behind the destructive fires.

The AP also highlighted a connection between a recent atmospheric river and the proliferation of vegetation, which later dried out and became fuel for the flames. In another report, scientists reiterated that climate change played a role in the fast spread of the fires.

As discussions continued, NBC News revealed that climate change raised the likelihood of fires by 35% according to a World Weather Attribution Group report. They later framed some wildfires as direct results of weather patterns linked to climate change.

MSNBC featured individuals escaping the fire who attributed their plight to climate change and natural disasters. One commentator mentioned that climate change is a major driver behind many current natural disasters. Another noted the suburban nature of the areas affected and questioned the implications of fires in such locales.

CNN also covered the rising temperatures, stating they had become a significant factor in driving wildfires, which are increasingly fueled by both natural and human influences. They echoed sentiments that global warming allows for conditions favorable to more intense fires.

In a study mentioned by NPR, there appeared to be a direct correlation between climate change and the occurrence of deadlier wildfires. Similar assessments were made by other outlets like The Guardian and Politico, which discussed the chaotic climate patterns contributing to these disasters.

California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, echoed these sentiments, considering the fires a form of natural disaster linked to larger climate issues. They emphasized the need for an adequate response to this unprecedented situation. Newsom stressed that the extreme weather is unmistakably tied to climate change, while Bass highlighted the urgency of their response measures for affected communities.

Moreover, former FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell stated that these catastrophes are manifestations of a new reality shaped by the climate crisis, noting the role of extreme weather in fueling disasters like the fires.
