Dem AG candidate Jay Jones urged GOP rival to step down, now under similar pressure

Violent text messages from a Democratic attorney general candidate in Virginia have surfaced, intensifying the controversy surrounding the state’s attorney general race. In 2022, Jay Jones allegedly expressed violent thoughts about shooting Todd Gilbert, the current and former Virginia House Speaker, in addition to making threats toward Gilbert’s children.

Back in 2021, Jones had previously called for then-Republican candidate Hearns Copeland to withdraw from his race due to controversial social media posts that were perceived as critiquing the appearance of the Virginia Democratic House Speaker, posts some even labeled as anti-Semitic. “Hate has no place in this Commonwealth, dude,” Jones remarked during that time.

In response to the recent revelations, Jones offered an apology, but many are urging him to step down from the race, questioning the inconsistency of his past advice to Copeland. Social media reactions have been fierce, with users demanding accountability. Republican figures are particularly vocal, with one user simply stating, “You should withdraw from the race,” adding that “hatred has no place in this Federation.”

Despite the backlash, Virginia Democrats continue to support Jones, even as calls for him to exit the race grow louder. Some critics point to the larger context of political violence, recalling recent incidents involving high-profile targets.

Interestingly, a Democratic senator has made large donations to a disgraced congressional candidate’s campaign, which could complicate matters for him down the line. While Jones maintains he stands by his comments, the ongoing scrutiny may force him to reassess his current position.

Jones’s comments about wanting more police officers killed have also drawn fire, although he has denied making such assertions. The community response raises questions about the broader implications of these heated exchanges in the political arena.
