Mike Lawler and Hakeem Jeffries engage in a heated exchange: 'Silence yourself'

Heated Exchange in Congress Over Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON — A dramatic confrontation erupted in the wake of the impending government shutdown.

Representative Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) engaged in a fierce exchange with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) after a press conference on Wednesday, where Jeffries had been discussing the partial government shutdown and Lawler’s role in it.

Lawler criticized Jeffries for his reluctance to engage in bipartisan talks aimed at extending tax credits for the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Jeffries, with a smirk, quipped about whether Donald Trump had given Lawler his “go-ahead” as Lawler confronted him in front of reporters.

In response, Lawler held up a copy of the ACA bill, dismissing any notion of Trump being in charge and pointing out that Jeffries had previously supported spending measures to avert shutdowns.

Jeffries shot back, accusing Lawler of attempting to gain attention. “You’re flaunting this to make yourself relevant,” he said sharply. “You should be embarrassed right now.”

Lawler replied that it was unfortunate Jeffries felt that way and questioned why Democrats didn’t support a bill that was already backed by a few of them.

Another exchange unfolded, with Lawler asking Jeffries to sign the bill to extend the ACA credits, while Jeffries retorted, “You’re embarrassing yourself.”

Democrats have consistently opposed a Republican-proposed Continuing Resolution (CR) that would provide government funding through November 21. They demand that Republicans eliminate Medicaid reforms and extend enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which are set to expire soon, as a condition for approving the CR.

Jeffries has dismissed the notion of a temporary extension, pushing instead for permanent changes to the subsidies as part of negotiations to reopen the government.

During the heated back-and-forth, Democrats targeted Lawler for his support of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, now known as the Working Families Tax Cuts Act.

Lawler defended his vote for the tax cut legislation, which he claimed would deliver significant tax reductions to Americans. “The average New Yorker will get a $4,000 tax cut,” he asserted.

Jeffries, however, accused the legislation of cutting Medicaid funding. In response, Lawler suggested that the reforms were focused on eliminating waste and fraud.

Things intensified as Jeffries advised Lawler not to speak to him if he wasn’t interested in listening. Lawler countered that Jeffries spent a large sum on his last campaign yet achieved little.

Amidst the tension, Lawler also referenced Jeffries’ controversial comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but Jeffries chose not to engage with this point.

In a parting shot, Jeffries proclaimed, “I spoiled you. I gave you 15 minutes of fame,” smiling as he walked away. He added, “You are a complete disgrace…and you will be defeated next year.”

Earlier, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) had similar confrontations with Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly, escalating tensions within the Capitol.
