PITTSBURGH — Training Camp Developments
Since the beginning of training camp, Jonathan Drouin and Bo Horvat have been paired on the second line, reminiscent of Horvat’s previous partnership with Matt Barzal.
For Isles coach Patrick Roy’s strategy of moving Barzal back to center to succeed, several factors need to align. Drouin and Horvat, making up a crucial part of a strong second line, are certainly among those elements.
“I think it’s really good,” Drouin said when discussing his connection with Horvat. “Especially during that last preseason game. We didn’t score, sure, but we had plenty of opportunities and made some good plays. Emile [Heineman] has been doing a solid job on that line too. He’s a great addition.”
Drouin inked a two-year, $8 million deal with the Islanders this offseason. He stands out as the most experienced player, surrounded by younger talents like Heineman, Max Shabanov, and Matthew Schaefer.
Previously with the Avalanche, Drouin’s third stop in his career comes after tenures with Tampa and Montreal. He has been part of several teams that contended for the Stanley Cup, reaching the Finals with the 2014-15 Lightning and the 2020-21 Canadiens.
With his speed and passing skills, Drouin is expected to enhance the Islanders’ offense, especially alongside established scorers like Horvat and Heineman, who have been impressive in camp.
“I think Bo has a well-rounded game,” Drouin mentioned. “[Heineman] is good at finding his place in the offensive zone, and it’s our job to get him the puck.”
Heineman, initially starting camp on the fourth line, has worked his way into the top six and is set to compete when the season begins Thursday night against the Penguins.
“His shot, speed, and strength are impressive,” Roy commented about Heineman. “But what I really like is the way he carries himself. He’s always ready on the ice.”
Cal Ritchie, recovering from a lower body injury, has started skating on his own, according to the Islanders.
Following their last season’s trade for Brock Nelson, Kyle Palmieri will keep wearing the ‘A’ at home, while Ryan Pulock will do so during road games.
The Islanders also confirmed a multi-year partnership with Vanda Pharmaceuticals as their exclusive jersey patch sponsor.
