Palestinians Celebrate Initial Ceasefire Agreement
In Khan Yunis, a city in the Gaza Strip, residents are taking to the streets to celebrate the announcement of a ceasefire as part of the first phase of what President Trump has described as a peace deal between Israel and Hamas. It’s a significant moment for the locals, marking a shift in the ongoing conflict.
In an interview with Sean Hannity, President Trump proclaimed the agreement a “historic step toward peace in the Middle East,” suggesting that it involved not just strategic discussions but also, there was an element of “luck” involved. He remarked, “More countries came together than you could ever imagine. This is a great thing for Israel, Muslims, Arab nations, and the United States. This is more than Gaza; it’s about broader peace in the region.”
Responses from global leaders have been mostly positive, with many suggesting that this could be a pivotal moment. Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed that if the initial phase of the plan receives approval, it would lead to the safe return of all hostages. He declared this a diplomatic success and a significant victory for Israel. “We will not rest until all hostages are returned and all objectives are achieved,” he emphasized.
Netanyahu also extended gratitude towards President Trump, calling him a “great friend and ally,” and noted that Israel is at a critical point of change. Israeli President Isaac Herzog echoed these sentiments, underscoring his appreciation while highlighting that the agreement provides a chance for the region to heal. His comments reflected a sense of hope, stating this agreement could be a vital moment for families affected by the conflict.
At the United Nations, Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the ceasefire and urged swift implementation. “This momentous opportunity must not be missed,” he stated, signaling support for recovery efforts in Gaza.
As part of the agreement, Hamas is expected to release twenty hostages by the end of the week, while Israeli troops are anticipated to withdraw from significant areas in Gaza during the first phase.
Amidst all this, President Trump declared, “Today is a great day for peace,” affirming that a real possibility of peace has finally emerged after years of discussions. Meanwhile, it’s reported that the Gaza Health Ministry has indicated a staggering death toll of over 67,000 Palestinians since the conflict reignited, although this figure remains unverified.
